New Holstein man dies Tuesday in resort drowning - Posted June 19, 2003

KIEL — A New Holstein man was swimming to an island in Cedar Lake when he became distressed and drowned Tuesday.

Brian L. Bodoh Jr., 21, was trying to swim to an island near the Cedar Lake Resort in Kiel when he went under the water. Although people at
the beach and paramedics tried to revive him, Bodoh was pronounced dead Tuesday night at the Chilton Medical Center.

The drowning was reported to Manitowoc County dispatchers at 7:14 p.m. from the resort. It was later determined that Bodoh was with five other
people who decided to swim to an island directly south of the resort’s beach area, said Manitowoc County Sheriff Ken Petersen.

Bodoh was about halfway to the island when “he became distressed, called for help and went under,” Petersen said.

The island is about 150 yards from the beach area, said Glenn Braun, owner of the resort. About halfway to the island is a water channel that pumps water into Cedar Lake from the Lake Superior Water Channel.

“It’s real cold there, I think he could have cramped up,” Braun said.

Bodoh was under the water for seven to 10 minutes before he was found. A paramedic playing volleyball at the resort pulled Bodoh out of the
water, Braun said. Other medical personnel were at the scene of the drowning and tried to revive him.

Alcohol does not appear to be a factor in Bodoh’s drowning, Petersen said. Braun also said that alcohol hadn’t been consumed prior to the
drowning.

On Wednesday, Braun said the drowning was “a freak accident. We’re very sad about it out here because we try to protect our patrons as best as
we can.”

Although people were playing volleyball at the time of drowning, the beach area was officially closed, Braun said. Swimmers also are warned
to avoid the area where water is pumping in from the channel.
